MUMBAI – In a significant move to ensure maximum voter participation, the Government of Maharashtra has officially declared a mandatory paid holiday on January 15, 2026, for the General Elections across 29 Municipal Corporations, including the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).
This directive, issued under the Representation of the People Act, 1951, mandates that all industrial, commercial, and private establishments grant leave to their employees to exercise their right to vote.
The notification applies to all permanent, temporary, and contractual workers who are registered voters in the polling areas. For sectors providing essential or continuous services where a full-day holiday is not feasible, employers are legally required to provide at least 2 to 3 hours of special leave.
The elections are to be held in 28 Municipal Corporations of Maharashtra and the BMC –Mumbai. (List attached)
